In his keynote address at CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics, IT, and advanced technology exhibition in 2025, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang presented the direction of AI development and raised a major question.
To summarize the presentation, the journey of artificial intelligence begins with AlexNet, which demonstrated an innovative improvement in recognition accuracy at the 2012 ImageNet competition. It is regarded as the origin of the development of deep learning-based artificial intelligence.
In 2016, there was a match of the century between 9-dan Lee Sedol and AlphaGo. Lee Sedol lost with a 1–4 record in five games, but remained the only human to defeat artificial intelligence. It is highly significant in that this match made the public realize the potential for artificial intelligence development.
Since then, artificial intelligence has evolved into perception AI, which recognizes and understands information in its environment. It has been applied in various fields, including voice recognition, which we widely use today, and image recognition in autonomous vehicles, with performance improving dramatically.
Now, through generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, it has become possible to create new and creative content based on existing data such as text, images, and music. Furthermore, we are entering the era of agentic AI, where humans do not need to give explicit instructions or teach everything, as they can independently plan, make autonomous decisions, and act to achieve goals.
And in the final stage, it reaches Physical AI, which operates directly in the physical world. In other words, whereas AI outputs so far have remained as computer data such as text, images, videos, and sound, going forward they will be realized through actual physical actions. This is essentially a story directly connected to robots.
Then how will society change going forward? Now, the topic of “coexistence” is emerging. Here, coexistence means the coexistence of robots and humans.
When the era of Physical AI arrives, robots will no longer be slow, annoying, and no longer beings that people must give one command at a time and experts must program one by one. A new era will dawn in which households will purchase and use household robots, just as ordinary people buy cars.
An era is coming in which, through LLMs (Large Language Models), we can understand what people say, teach everything, and even complete tasks by thinking and making decisions on our own without being instructed.
Just ten years ago, it was considered mere fantasy in science fiction films, but given the speed of technological advancement today, it now seems to be becoming a reality. In particular, the emergence of humanoid robots—humanoid robots that are similar to humans and highly autonomous—will stand out.
At the GTC 2024 event, it is important to note the part where NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang said, “Humanoid robots will become commonplace, just like cars today.”
Big tech companies are currently pouring massive investments into robots, especially humanoids. At the GTC 2024 event, NVIDIA unveiled "GR00T," an AI platform for humanoid robots.
Figure AI, which has a partnership with the developer of ChatGPT, successfully conducted a two-week trial operation of its humanoid robot, Figure 02, at BMW’s U.S. automobile plant last year.
In addition, Tesla in the United States unveiled the second-generation Optimus, and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company also introduced the second-generation Atlas after acquiring Boston Dynamics in the United States in 2020.
Both companies are considering deploying humanoid robots in their respective factories. In addition, Agility Robotics’ “Digit” robot, which was featured on TIME magazine’s list of greatest inventions for 2024, has been in pilot operation at Amazon fulfillment warehouses since 2023.
As the robotics industry grows explosively like this, the demand for research and development personnel will also increase significantly, but the demand for practical workers who can operate, maintain, and utilize robots on site will be just as enormous.
Therefore, while talent that researches and develops theory and new technologies is important, most industrial sites need hands-on robot engineers.
There is a government-funded national university established to cultivate practical talent in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. It is the Korea Polytechnic University Robot Campus located in Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk.
Since its opening in 2021, the Robotics Campus has been admitting new students under the “K-SHIFT Liberal Major (Discipline)” program, which guarantees students the right to choose their final major. Starting in the 2027 academic year, it will select 100 small-group new students under two disciplines: the “Mechatronics Robotics Discipline” and the “Robot Systems Convergence Discipline.”
Moreover, through a project- and practice-oriented curriculum, the Robot Campus has enabled students to achieve outstanding results.
At the 2025 Hanium DreamUp Expo, it received the Minister of Science and ICT Award, and in the same year, it also won the Minister of Science and ICT Award at the WCRC Logistics Robot Competition, and was selected to represent Korea at the international robotics competition RoboGames, where it also won a gold medal in the logistics robot (mobility) category.
In addition, the university actively carries out various student capacity-building activities, including on-campus writing contests, agreements with 80 family companies, and company-invited job briefing sessions.
This year, a short-term stay-based student international exchange program with Kyoto Institute of Technology and Textile and Design in Japan was also conducted. As a result of these efforts, the employment rate of 2025 graduates reached an impressive 92.1%, according to our own data.
In addition, the Robot Campus is being developed with a total budget of approximately 18.4 billion won to complete a second engineering building (5,000㎡) with four floors by January 2030. Building on these achievements, the university was honored with the highest grade, “S Grade,” in the 2025 Korea Polytechnic University Evaluation conducted among polytechnic universities nationwide.
Starting September 7, the first round of early admission applications for the 2027 academic year freshman recruitment will officially begin. New students can receive an affordable tuition benefit of 1.08 million won.
Since 2008, high school graduates who enter the quota based on their school records and then transfer their residence to Yeongcheon City will have the opportunity to receive a scholarship of 1.1 million won as well as support for dormitory fees.
